Hecla Junction Camping: Water From the Chair, Dry Pad

I'm writing this from Hecla Junction, site 1104, Labor Day weekend. The Thor Compass AWD is on the pad. The Arkansas River is right there past the boulder line. Not somewhere behind the trees. Right over the water from the chair.

Labor Day weekend was crowded, and I did not want to gamble on a leftover pad. I asked Grok Bot to help hunt a reservable riverfront site and lock one before the calendars filled. That is how I ended up on 1104 for September 5 through 7. I already wrote the method piece on how I find a waterfront campsite on a crowded weekend. This one is what it looks like once you're actually here.

The pad and the rocks

Hecla sits in a rocky canyon stretch of the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area. Amazing rock formations. Boulders everywhere. The pad is gravel with big rounded rocks marking the edge, then the river, then the cliff wall across the water. Dry camping. No hookups. Basic site, which is fine. I didn't come for a pedestal.

It feels pretty warm, around 85, but there's a nice breeze coming through. Awning out. Chair out. The view does the rest.

Getting in

I came in on County Road 194 off US-285. The road was good coming in. Not a lot of washboard, which is worth saying because a lot of these access roads get chewed up by late summer. Nothing dramatic here today.

What you pay (and what I paid)

Researched from Colorado Parks and Wildlife today: AHRA camping is reservation only, and the Daily Vehicle Pass is listed at $10-$15. Spotty cell service is also on their page, which matches what I'm seeing in the canyon. Book through cpwshop.com (ReserveAmerica is limited for CPW). The official camping page is AHRA camping and lodging on CPW. Ruby Mountain and Hecla Junction are both listed there as basic campsites.

Firsthand: I paid $10 for the vehicle pass, on top of the site fee. I'm not putting the site fee dollars here. Just what I paid for the pass, and the researched range so you know CPW's current board.

Fire restrictions (researched today)

Chaffee County is under Stage 1 fire restrictions. Verified today on the Chaffee County Sheriff fire restrictions page: Stage 1 since August 21 at 6am for unincorporated Chaffee County, including the towns. In a developed campground, a campfire in a permanent metal grate is allowed under Stage 1. LP / propane stoves you can turn on and off are allowed too. Restrictions change. Check current rules before you light anything. I'm not claiming a county expiry date.

There's a metal grate on this pad. That lines up with what Stage 1 allows here.

Why Starlink is already out

Cell is weak in the canyon. CPW says spotty cellular and data throughout AHRA, and firsthand that's real from this chair. Starlink is already set up. Fat-tire e-bike is already out too. It's warm enough on this pad that the AC is running on the Pecron. If you're trying to work from a spot like this, the dish isn't optional, and neither is enough battery to keep both the dish and the coach loads going. Bottom line from 1104

Hecla Junction camping, for me, is the river from the chair, the rocks, dry camping without pretending it's a resort, and enough breeze to make 85 feel fine. Road in was good. Vehicle pass was $10 for me. Fire rules are Stage 1 today, so check before you burn. Book early on a holiday weekend. Reservable waterfront pads go first for a reason.
