Does Starlink Need a UPS? Battery Backup I Actually Run

Starlink doesn't officially require a UPS. Mine runs through a battery buffer anyway, every single day, and the reason has nothing to do with the dish itself. It's the power source feeding it.
Why the reboots actually happen
The dish is fine on stable power. The problem shows up when Starlink is fed off a generator, an RV inverter, or any circuit sharing a line with something that pulls a hard current spike, an AC compressor kicking on, a fridge compressor cycling, a generator's own voltage wobble as a load comes online. That spike doesn't just dim the lights. It's enough of a voltage event to make Starlink cold-reboot, and a Starlink reboot isn't instant. You're looking at two to three minutes of no connection, right in the middle of a call if you're unlucky. What I actually run instead of a UPS
I don't plug Starlink straight into the rig. It runs through an EcoFlow, an older Delta, about five years old now, roughly 1,200Wh. The battery sits between the RV's power and the dish, so whatever surge the generator or the AC throws, the EcoFlow absorbs it and Starlink just sees clean, steady power. On a normal workday the display reads something like 73 watts going out to Starlink and the rest of my gear, 94 percent battery, better than a day of runtime showing. That output number is the dish plus my laptop and monitor, not the dish by itself, worth saying so nobody thinks Starlink alone pulls 73 watts.

Under actual load, laptop and Starlink both running, I get about 4.5 to 5 hours out of that old Delta before it needs a recharge. That's the honest number, not a spec-sheet number. And there's a failure mode nobody puts in the marketing: if you try to charge the EcoFlow and run Starlink off it at the same time, sustained, it's overheated on me more than once. Pass-through charging under load is hard on these units. I've learned to pick one or the other, run it down on battery then recharge clean, rather than trying to do both at once.
The old Delta is still the Starlink buffer. I've also been wiring a bigger house stack, a Pecron F3000LFP with two Battle Born batteries, that's a different job than the dish. Does it need to be a specific kind of UPS
Any standard consumer UPS with a pure sine wave output works fine on the electrical side. What actually matters more for RV use is capacity and portability, which is why I run a power station instead of a UPS box. A UPS is built to protect a stationary desktop for a few minutes during an outage. I need something I can carry, that holds enough charge to get through a work session, and that can take a beating in a compartment.
Can you just plug Starlink into your RV's existing inverter instead? You can, but if that inverter is on the same circuit as your AC compressor or fridge, you'll still see reboots when they cycle. A dedicated battery buffer sitting between the inverter and the dish is what actually fixes it. That's the whole reason the EcoFlow is there.
How much power the dish itself needs
The standard dish draws roughly 50 to 75 watts in normal use, closer to 20 watts idle. The newer Standard 4 and 4X models run more like 75 to 100 watts active, per EcoFlow's own published numbers and Jackery's independent testing. Confirm your own generation before you size anything. None of that requires a big battery on its own. A small station rides through a surge just fine. Size only grows if you actually want hours of unplugged runtime, and that's a different question than the UPS question. So, do you need one
Not officially, no. Starlink doesn't publish a UPS requirement anywhere. But if you're running off a generator or an RV electrical system, the surges are coming from your setup, not the dish, and a battery buffer between the two is what keeps you from losing the connection every time something cycles on. That's the whole reason mine has run through an EcoFlow for years now.
If your shore power itself is the concern rather than what's happening inside the RV, that's a different problem with a different fix.
