Does Starlink Need a UPS or Battery Backup?

Short answer: Starlink doesn't require a UPS to function, but if you run it off a generator or an RV electrical system, you need one anyway. The dish itself doesn't care where its power comes from. The problem is what generators and RV power actually do: they cycle, they surge, and Starlink reacts to a bad voltage moment by doing a full cold reboot, the two-to-three-minute kind that kills a video call.

What a UPS does for Starlink, specifically
A UPS (or, more accurately for this use case, a battery-based power station acting as one) sits between your power source and the dish. It doesn't just provide backup runtime if the power cuts out entirely, that's the part most people think of. The bigger job off-grid is filtering out the surges and dips that a generator or a cycling AC compressor throws at the line before they ever reach the dish. Clean, steady power in, clean, steady power out.

Do you actually need one?
- Running Starlink off shore power or a stable inverter at home: No, skip it. Clean utility power doesn't surge the way a generator does.
- Running it off an RV generator or inverter, especially with an AC or compressor fridge on the same circuit: Yes. This is the exact situation that causes reboot loops, and a battery buffer is the fix that actually holds up.

Sizing it: how much battery does Starlink actually need
A standard Starlink dish draws roughly 50 to 75 watts in normal use and around 20 watts idle. The newer Standard 4 and 4X hardware runs a bit hotter, more like 75 to 100 watts active (per EcoFlow's published breakdown and Jackery's independent numbers, confirm your own generation). You don't need a huge battery just to buffer the dish itself, a small power station easily rides through a surge. The battery only needs to be big if you're also trying to run it for hours unplugged, which is a runtime question, not a UPS question.
